Hunt Valley Rotary and Heavenly Ham Launch
Four-Way Test Contest in Baltimore County Schools

HUNT VALLEY, Md. – The Rotary Club of Hunt Valley and Heavenly Ham of Baltimore, in partnership with Baltimore County Public Schools and the Archdiocese of Baltimore, have commenced The Four-Way Test Contest as an ethics enrichment partnership for twelve county schools during the 2007-08 school year.

The Four-Way Test, which has been a guiding principle of Rotary International since 1943, asks its members to ask themselves these four questions when making any decision: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Participating Baltimore County Public Schools include five elementary schools (Fifth District, Prettyboy, Seventh District, Sparks and Warren), two middle school (Hereford and Cockeysville) and three high schools (Hereford, Dulaney, and Loch Raven).  The elementary and middle schools of St. Stephen’s of Bradshaw, MD will also take part.

On January 7th, the schools launched contests that encouraged students to creatively express their thoughts about the ethics program, with the incentive of cash prizes, courtesy of Heavenly Ham of Baltimore, for the top three finishers.

Elementary school students in grades 3 through 5 can develop a poster, 8th-grade middle school students are encouraged to write a short essay for their English classes, and high school students can write a speech as part of their public speaking courses.

The contest will end on February 19th and winners will be announced on March 20th. On April 17th, the Rotary Club of Hunt Valley will host a banquet for all winners and their families, where the winning speech-writers from the high schools will perform their speeches. The grand prize winner for the speech contest will be awarded with $1,000, and the runner-up will earn $300.

Heavenly Ham of Baltimore will fund more than $5,000 in prize money for students and will donate $250 to all schools that achieve a 15 percent participation level in the program.
