Wine For Water “Fun-Raises” For Water Project
(Posted: 11-18-08)

Over 85 attendees enjoyed fine wines, great food, steel drum music, and fellowship at the Rotary Club of Hunt Valley’s 2nd Annual Wine For Water Fundraiser held on November 1st.

More than $3,500 was raised for the James W. Houck Foundation and the club’s Kyrgyzstan Water project being undertaken in the former Soviet republic. Proceeds from the event are earmarked for an irrigation project to begin next year.

The evening was organized by co-chairs Nancy Young, the club’s director of International Service, and Maria Santana, 2009-10 President-Elect, along with member Stuart Doriss and his wife Allison, owners of Four Corners Fine Wine and Spirits in Jacksonville. Catering was provided by Hayfields Country Club, site of the event.

The Kyrgyzstan project is the club’s second international water project. In 2007, the club raised over $20k for a drinking water well project in Malawi through its first wine tasting combined with matching grants from District 7620 and Rotary International. This year’s project will also be supported by the Rotary Club of Towson as well as clubs in Florida and Bishkek, the country’s capital.

The club would like to thank all of the attendees, donors, sponsors, advertisers, and volunteers for the event which by all measure was a great success.  Photos from the event can be viewed here>>

Wine Tasting has "Grape" Expectations
(Posted: 10.30.07)

By Nancy Young, Club International Service Director!

George Washington may have slept at Slade's Inn, but it is doubtful that he had as much fun as the Hunt Valley Rotarians and their guests did on October 27.  Stuart and Allison Doriss, proprietors of Four Corners Wine and Spirits, and their knowledgeable staff delighted the palates of wine enthusiasts with a broad array of "cabs" from California, France, Australia and Chile.

Everything came together for a fantastic evening; the weather cleared, the sun came out and the people came.  They munched on great food, they sampled really fine wines, they talked, they networked, they ordered wine, and everyone left with a smile on their face.
The event would not have been as successful as it was without many hours of behind-the-scenes work. Thanks to Bonnie McPhail for graphics, Jeanne Brandenburg for crafting the wooden cabs, Suzanne Amos for timely suggestions and ideas, Maria Santana and Karen Rucker for support, food ideas and catering service, the beautiful venue, Slade's Inn, and finally, the warm greeting of all the guests by the incomparable Irving and his beautiful wife Virginia.

Seventy-five people attended and over $3,500 was raised. A portion of the proceeds will be contributed to the Malawi Water Project. A perfect evening for the very first Hunt Valley Wine Tasting fun, fund-raising event!

Stephen's Chariot: Next Stop, "The Big Apple"
(Posted: 10.30.07)

The Hunt Valley Rotary hereby proclaims its respect and affection for Stephen Mathai, and its recognition of his many accomplishments as a corporate executive, world church leader, poet, public servant, distinguished Rotarian, and tenor, baritone and bass. Since we have enjoyed his songs, his heart, and his eloquence for many years, we are now ready to share him with the rest of the world. But in doing so we advise the world as follows: provide Stephen with a ride, and he will keep you entertained and enlightened. But be sure to have timer with a stop watch at hand prepared to make sure he sits down.”

Good luck on your move to New York, Stephen.  We will miss you!  >>View Photos

HV Rotary supports Baltimore's Play It Smart Program
(Archive)

This year's Golf Tournament will provide funding for HV Rotary's newest charity partner, the Play It Smart Program of the National Football Foundation.

In 2000, Play It Smart was initiated in Baltimore at Patterson High School. Due to the tremendous success and impact, Play It Smart expanded to Forest Park in 2002 and Edmondon was added in 2004. Prior to Play It Smart, less than 25% of football players took the SAT.  Since its inception at Patterson,  79 seniors have participated in the Play It Smart program and 100% graduated on time.  In addition, 87% have been accepted in an institution of higher education.

We are pleased to join the Jonathan Ogden Foundation in supporting this worthwhile project here in Baltimore!   For more information visit The Play It Smart Program .

Group Study Exchange
(Archive)

A number of Hunt Valley Rotarians and their families are participating in this year's Group Stude Exchange (GSE).  Nancy Young is serving on this year's committee, and Eric Miller and Maria Santana are hosting two of the representatives.  Since its inception in 1065, the GSE program has provided grants for countless teams of men and women, in the early stages of their business and professional careers, to travel abroad and share vocational information with representatives of their respective professions in another country. Team members spend four to six weeks studying the host country's institutions, economy, and culture, while observing how their own professions are practiced abroad.  More than 500 exchanges between paired Rotary districts occur each year, advancing the program's ultimate goal of promoting international understanding and goodwill.

This year's exchange welcomed six medical professionals visiting from Rotary District 2220 from Western Russia.  The 2007 exchange will be with District 1600 in the Netherlands.
